We heard that fireworks over Boldt Castle were very good for the 4th of July so we took a chance that we could stay at the fuel dock at Bonnie Castle Marina. We had called but couldn’t get a commitment.
The trip from Kingston started out with a little mishap with our large fenders. We had started using a fender line system that made it easier to raise and lower the fenders. Unfortunately when we left the marina I had not brought the fenders up where they would not get into the water as we traveled. They must have bounced loose and two fenders gone. We had gone about 2 miles but decided to turn around see if we could find them. We spotted one about a mile away and retrieved it the other was nowhere in sight.
The rest of the trip into the Thousand Islands was pleasant with beautiful scenery. This area has beautiful water and homes on the little islands.
We went to Boldt Island and checked into the USA. The customs guy was great and we were in and out in about 20 minutes. We went straight over to the Bonnie Castle Marina and got fuel. It was nice to see $4.00 a gallon. We asked again about docking and they said we could come back in 4 hours after closing. Charlotte managed to get permission from Lonnie for us to just move a little out of the way and we got to stay there for the night. Lonnie and his staff were terrific.
We were directly across from Boldt Castle and we set our cars on the lawn to watch the fireworks. A group from Texas setup behind us. It reminded us of meeting our friend Tommy Holton at the beach back in the day. We could drive onto the beach and Tommy would bring his truck with the grill in the back. The fireworks were good and we were in a great spot. It was nice not to be out in the river with the hundreds of boats that were anchored. Right after the fireworks the boats were scattering like cockroaches to head home. The 5th was a work day for most. We had done that once in Downtown Jacksonville, it is very stressful to be on the water with hundreds of people in a hurry.
