Burritts Rapids’ Lock 17 Rideau

We left Ottawa about 8:45 as the first bridge opening that we would need was only a mile away and would not be available till after rush hour. This part of the Rideau is mostly canals connecting small lakes, it won’t be until after Smith Falls that we get into the larger lakes on the Rideau.

Along the way we saw a small community pool that reminded us of our favorite movie to watch in the car when we traveled, ” Sandlot”

I was looking for Windy Peppercorn and Squints.

There are some really nice homes along the way and some that remind us of home. Ken and Pat stopped at a Marina to get some work done, we went ahead to lock 17 at Burritts Rapids. It is a quite small village. They have a one lane, two way traffic, bridge that crosses the canal. The bridge is swung out of the way for boats by putting a large crank in the center of the road and walking around in a circle to swing open the bridge. When we were ready to leave the lock wall we had to let the lock master know and he sent one of the staff down to the bridge to open it for us.  The bridge was  built in 1897. The sunset and sunrise over the lake below the lock was beautiful.
