Beardrop Harbour
Westbound and Down, well maybe East bound or just Humble Pie
We decided to make a short 2.5 hour trip to Beardrop. Along the way we have to do through a tight channel called Little Detroit. Most boaters make a Secrete warning on channel 16 before entering to be sure the channel is clear, not enough room to pass another boat.
As we approached I call and said we were headed into Little Detroit, the trawler in front of us did the same a few minutes later. We waited behind the other trawler… and waited, after a while some called for the east bound trawler approaching Little Detroit, we waited for the trawler in front of us to respond. The call came again so we answered. They asked us to go to channel 6, then explained that we were West bound and waiting for ourselves, they had stopped because in our first transmission we had said we were East bound. Now I have an excuse, lame as it might be, our compass in front of the radio was stuck on East. We caught this earlier in the trip but it had seemed to correct itself. Now it’s taped tape over.
I apologized to the other trawler, Potest Fieri, they turned out to be Gold Loopers (already completed the loop at least once). No problem and we were headed to the same anchorage. We invited them over for drinks. We enjoyed meeting Danny and Susan, they are Canadians that completed the loop several years ago. When they were in Florida for the winter it was one of the coldest in History. They confirmed that we were essentially at the end of our loops venture into the Canadian Wilderness. They gave us some tips for the rest of the trip. We hope they will look us up when they do the Loop again. Their suggestions have us taking a closer look at how to explore Lake Michigan.
