Kingston is a great stop. First of all the dock is not next to the train track. We join the Mariners Museum and got a discount to dock at their facility. It is a beautiful town. We contacted Craig and Barbra on ”Blue Heron” and decide to rent a car for the 31st and go to Hyde Park. We visited FDR home, the Vanderbilt Mansion and ACI (America Culinary Institute).
This was a great side trip and could have easily taken an extra day. The first stop was ACI, we were lucky to get a reservsation with only one days notice. Lunch was terrific and they gave us “egg creams” at the table, no cream or eggs in this drink. FDR’s home was actually his mothers home almost his entire life. I thought his bedroom with the direct line to the White House was pretty cool. The Vanderbilt’s home became public property when the heirs could not get $250,000 for it and several hundred acres. The house alone cost more than $2,000,000 to build. These are in 1930 to 1940′s $$$. My favorite room was the “men’s smoking room” The last stop was to the oldest continuously operating pub.
Before we left Kingston, Ron, a volunteer at the museum help me make some fender boards, the folks we meet are really just so helpful and giving of their time.
